All metronomes let you set the Beats Per Minute (BPM).
Some have a Dial or Slider or Digital button that allows the user to adjust how fast or slow the metronome pulses. If you know how fast you would like to go, start by adjusting the button or slider to the specified BPM.
Sometimes, fancy metronomes may also have a Tap tempo button allowing the user to set the BPM by tapping a button at the speed they want.

[[How to use it for practice]]
[[Try a practice scenario]]
Some strategies for effective practice are to:

Start slow and increase BPM gradually.

Stay relaxed and have fun! Try not to rush or drag the beat.

Think about each beat as if it were a number and count along in your head to the metronome.
1. 2. 3. 4. ➜ 1. 2. 3. 4.

Use the metronome to keep a consistent tempo while practicing musical exercises (scales or arpeggios), or tricky sections in a piece of music.

Try internalizing the pulse of the metronome through silent beats. (ie. Instead of having the metronome click on every beat, have it click on beat 1, but remain silent for beats 2, 3 and 4.)

A metronome is a digital or analog measurement tool that produces an audible click.
Musicians use metronomes to practice keeping a consistent speed or pace (tempo).

Set the metronome to 55 BPM.

Try counting the beats out loud by breaking each beat into two smaller, evenly spaced beats. (Ie. Rather than just counting "1" on beat one, try counting it as "1 and" instead. This is called subdivison. Count each of the four beats now as "1 and, 2 and, 3 and, 4 and," where the pulse of the metronome now only occurs when a number is said. (The "and" count should be evenly spaced between each click).

Now, can you play your instrument on each beat while counting "1 and, 2 and, 3 and, 4 and," out loud?

Still too easy? Now, make all except for the first beat silent.

While subdividing the beats out loud, can you play your instrument only on beat one when the metronome clicks? Can you do this with your eyes closed?
